Urban Commuters aren’t famed for their sartorial choices. Trainers with suits. Tracksuits with ties. But why save style for the weekend? Uberbag believes that true style is a lifestyle. We combine form and function to create accessories which reflect your needs. As modern city life gets more complicated, Überbag simplifies your urban uniform with understated investment pieces.
Whether you need to carry an iPad or a paint palette, if you’re looking for an alternative to the scruffy nylon rucksack or corporate briefcase, Überbags are built with your needs in mind. The foundation of our products is materials of superior quality: eco-friendly leathers sourced from ethical companies. As Uberbag has grown more exclusive, we have specialised in vegetable tanned leathers and traditional manufacturers.
Our minimalist products transcend trends, moving seamlessly from one season to the next as the sumptuous leathers deepen and mature. Vegetable tanning has been used for centuries. Rather then using chemicals in the tanning process, it uses natural extracts, such as bark from trees to tan the leather. The process is time consuming and is now very unusual due to the high cost.
We use traditional manufacturers in Europe who are experts at working with thick vegetable tanned leathers. As they are “naked” leathers, they have to be handled very carefully. It’s a very intensive process but creates a superior individually handcrafted product. You can expect to hand them to your Grandchildren looking better than they did when they were first crafted.
OUR VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER BAGS
About the unique eco-friendly leather used in some of our bags
These bags are made in Europe using the finest European hides. They are dyed using natural vegetable dyes and do not use any of the chemicals that the majority of leather being produced today does. Vegetable tanned leathers are becoming increasingly rare as companies switch from traditional methods of tanning leather using vegetable extracts to mass produced chrome tanned leathers.
Vegetable tanned leather develop a gorgeous patina the more they are used and the more they are exposed to the natural elements such as sunlight. With the Natural Veg Tan bags, the shade of the bag will change with and will get darker – this is one of the real beauties of this unique leather. This is a normal and should be expected as the leather develops a patina.
Vegetable tanned leathers display natural characteristics of the leather which make each bag unique. There may be small marks such as scars or insect bites and unlike mass produced bags, these marks are not hidden by layers of pigmented paint. Each hide absorbs the dyes differently there are slight variations in the shade of the leather.
INTERVIEW WITH FOUNDERS
We were recently interviewed by a journalist wanting to know more about the Überbag.
When was the brand started and why ?
We started the brand in 2008. Almost everyone working in London and other cities were wearing black nylon rucksacks or very similar looking bags. There were some who were carrying hard traditional briefcases or portfolios. Students were almost all carrying tired canvas type messenger bags. We wanted to offer something a bit different. Well designed bags, which weren’t “in your face”, but designed to be practical and bags that challenged conventional design. Materials were very important to us as we wanted to use leathers that would last and age gracefully. We wanted to use eco-friendly leathers as much as possible and bring back some of the tradition that had been lost over the years to cater for mass production.
We spent years sourcing the finest materials from tanneries and suppliers, and looking for traditional manufacturers who were true artisans and masters of craftsmanship. We also need to ensure that all the suppliers complied with and shared the same ethical values that we do.
We worked with these tanneries and craftsman to turn our designs into beautifully crafted bags … this first range was so popular that it sold out almost immediately. Since then, we have learnt so much about the use of traditional vegetable tanned leathers in bags but this learning is an ongoing journey ..
Who are the bags designed by ?
The bags are designed by ourselves.
What’s the concept behind the aesthetic ?
We started Überbag on the minimalistic concept and also on the worn vintage look. More recently, we have gone for traditional designs with military influences. We look back into history and see how bags were used and use this as an inspiration. For example, our Haversack is a modern interpretation of the traditional single shoulder haversack that was used to carry food. Our satchels are a modern interpretation of traditional satchels that were carried by hand, over the shoulder or as a backpack
